Root canal treatment is used to save damaged teeth from being completely lost. This often-misunderstood procedure is actually very simple. Each tooth contains a small bundle of nerves and blood vessels called the pulp. When a tooth gets damaged, the pulp can become exposed and infected by bacteria living in your mouth. This can cause a serious infection that could result in gum disease or the tooth falling out. Root canal treatment prevents this by removing the pulp from the damaged tooth.
After the tooth is preserved, it is usually restored with a filling or dental crown.
